Tabgha Priory, Lake of Gennesaret
We have lived, prayed and worked at Tabgha on the shores of the Sea of Galilee since 1939. Our main task is to take care of the sanctuary of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. The property, together with the Dormition Abbey on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem, belongs to the German Association of the Holy Land.
Former Abbot Nicolas once described Mt. Zion and Tabgha as two pieces of a whole that cannot be separated, in much the same way that the ministry of Jesus in the Galilee and the days of his death and resurrection in Jerusalem cannot be separated. Both places are necessary for the life of our family of monks.
Community and Responsibilities
“Come with me to a quiet place”, Jesus said to his disciples; then he withdrew together with them to a location at the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Even today we still hear these words of the Lord!
Traditions
Tabgha is located in the vicinity of some of the most well-known sites relating to Jesus’ ministry, where he healed, performed miracles, told parables, and taught the people.
The Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes
We are caretakers of the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, which was erected in 1982 over a previous church. We mainly serve pilgrims and guests who visit this site.
Meeting Place Beit Noah
In our Center of Encounter we offer vacation possibilities to groups of disabled adults, youth and children from Palestine and Israel.
