Community and Responsibilities

Bishops, monks, guest priests and volunteers in front of the basilica.

“Come with me to a quiet place”, Jesus said to his disciples; then he withdrew together with them to a location at the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Even today we still hear these words of the Lord, and as monks, we willingly accept his invitation and follow him wholeheartedly.

In the same way that five thousand people once came to hear Jesus, to experience him, to be healed and fed by him, so also today there are thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world who daily flock to the site of the marvelous Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes.

There is a certain tension in this place that produces a unique fruitfulness in the spiritual life of the individual and the entire community.

  • To worship God where Jesus withdrew to pray in solitude is for our community at Tabgha a precious gift and primary calling. Our service and labor flow out of it.
  • We are caretakers of the celebrated Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes and attend to the many visiting pilgrims and tourists.
  • At “Beit Noah”, our Center of Encounter, we extend hospitality to special-need groups from social institutions and individuals.
  • From 2007 to 2012 we built a new monastery to the south of the church in order to protect and preserve our monastic life style and to allow for the growth of the community.
